Why for the love of Christ did they make another “Mummy” movie? I felt the the spin-off “The Scorpion King” killed the successful franchise. Without knowing this was the “Mummy 3” trailer, the first few minutes seem entertaining: shots of China, the Great Wall, Chinese tombs, etc. But then, Brendan Fraser shows up and you know its basically “Big Mummy in Little China.” You see shots of the principals: Rick, Eve (not Rachel Weisz, but Maria Bello from “The Cooler”, “Payback”), their grown-up son, and JET LI.
Jet Li plays the villain in this one, the “Dragon Emperor”. WHY? is all I can say. I remember when Fearless came out; Jet Li said he was retiring after that and Hero, which should be on everyone’s viewing list. Not to mention the recent box office puff-piece “The Forbidden Kingdom” with Jackie Chan (even Jackie said the movie was garbage, he just did it to work with Jet Li). And the chick from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? They always have to have a character native to the region acting as some kind of protector or crusader, similar to the “token black guy” in “Not Another Teen Movie”.
Let’s see, what else: more CGI epic battles between two mummy armies, a cat-like Yetti, the always melodrama slow-moving run and yell scene executed flawlessly by John Hanna (HBO’s “Carnivale”), planes, fireworks, ad infinitum…, and the cherry on the cupcake is a three-headed hydra blowing flames which morph into the title. They couldn’t even get the original director, Stephen Sommers, to direct it. Directed by Rob Cohen (Fast and the Furious, XXX), and set for another summer release date of August 1, 2008, another trailer which serves as a signpost saying “We don’t care about the movie, we just want your scrillah.”
